Quetzal’s First Poem

Several things before the poem for those of you who don’t know me:

Quetzal is my adopted daughter. She is 13 yrs. old.  She was born in Guatemala.  She came to live with us when she was four months old.  We have been to Guatemala numerous times over the last 13 yrs. We have met her birth mother. Quetzal wrote this poem for a school assignment. She okayed my posting it here.

The Resplendent Quetzal

I am from Guatemala where the Quetzal flies.
From hot days and cool nights.
I am from huevos rancheros in the morning,
And tortillas and pina de aguas.

I am from my family
And the walks in the park.
I am from the chicken buses
And gas fumes.

I am from the Maya
From Tikal and the myths
And spicy hot chocolate.
I am from jade beads and jaguars.
I am from Guatemala where the Quetzal flies.
